First of All, I am NOT a fan of Facebook and merely put up with Apple iPhone because I don’t like it when my phone explodes! Mark Zuckerberg is and adolescent adult and Tim Cook is a conceptual infant. But, their battle of words over internet privacy and security is simply an idiotic attempt to one up the other without an audience who cares!
Facebook is a free social media site whose users are its PRODUCTS. Apple iPhone is a telephone and a personal data assistant and a personal portal to the world-wide web and YOU are Apple’s CUSTOMER! So, to compare any facet of these products is comparing apples (pun intended) to cannon balls!
You fully expect Apple to provide the highest possible personal data protection for anything you do with your iPhone. (don’t bet on it) For one thing, you paid big bucks for your phone and are paying through the nose every month for your air time. Who you call, text or email; which sites you visit; who you Face Time with; and all of your contact, credit card, and other personal information you store on our iPhone/Cloud should be absolutely secure and not shared with advertisers or made public in any way. (Except for the NSA, FBI, CIA, DIA and other public agencies) Who cares if Apple’s Tim Cook badmouths Facebook’s Little Markie Zuckerberg about the lack of security for Facebook users? Not me.
You should have no expectation that Facebook or any other FREE social networking software will protect any data that you put in your profile nor any posts that you create or share. In fact, anyone that you Friend is also up for grabs in the same way. You want privacy, then sign up and pay for a social networking service! Just how did you think Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. make money? Did you think they were part of Catholic Charities or the Salvation Army? If you really want to know how little control you have over your Facebook info, just read the Terms you blew off when you created your account.
Enter Your Savior, CONGRESS!!!! YIKES
So, the left is shooting their own darling, Facebook, in the foot, thigh, head and heart by exposing the Cambridge Analytics data use in during the 2016 Republican Presidential Primary! The left needed another narrative against Trump now that their Russian drum beat is boomeranging on the left!
Now, you see all of the Congressional blowhards fighting for air time to out demagogue each other over protecting Consumers against using a Product they Don’t Pay For! DO YOU THINK THAT THERE IS ANYONE IN CONGRESS WHO HAS A CLUE WHAT THESE TECHNOLOGIES ARE ALL ABOUT? And, do you THINK THAT ANYONE IN CONGRESS CAN FIX ANYTHING. If you do, I offer you to consider; US Post Office; Obamacare; your DMV; the VA; the IRS; US Immigration Laws; and basically any government agency/service other than our military!
Congress is considering how to secure your Facebook and other social media providers data, even from their advertisers! The only problem is that your data is THEIR PRODUCT that they sell to their advertisers in order for you to Facebook and other social media sites FREE. Would you use Facebook, Twitter or Instagram if they were not free? I seriously doubt it. Would Facebook have 2 Billion worldwide users if the users had to pay $10.00/month to use its site? NOPE!
Have you ever used a web browser like Google or Bing to search for a product like a man’s wool plaid shirt? Once you do, you will see ads for that shirt until the day you die since those search engines pass your data to their advertising subscribers! You probably don’t mind because maybe one of them will actually send you an ad for a product you actually like! This is called CAPITALISM. Congressional “safeguards” are called SOCIALISM. Remember what President Reagan said about government:
The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’
So, it is really up to you to control what level of security you want when using FREE social networking.
- The most secure is DON’T SIGN UP.
- Next, put nothing in your profile other than your name, or the name of someone you don’t like if you want to make their life miserable! 🙂 The only thing that is potentially accessible to others is your name.
- Then, if you post something, restrict it to only people you have “friended“.
- Better yet, don’t have any friends!
- OR, make up a very nice pretend friend that will only say nice things about you and always use a smiley face when responding to you!
If your info is shared to advertisers or apps, your friends info may also be exposed and visa versa. So, it is up to you to protect yourself. DON’T LET CONGRESS SCREW UP WHAT IS PROBABLY THE ONLY FREE THING YOU HAVE LEFT! If not, you may be back to licking stamps!!!
