Everytime Republicans, and 80% of the American Public, attempt to require a photo Id in order to vote, the Democrats stand up and accuse the Republicans of creating Jim Crow Laws.  I’ll bet the vast majority of these Democrat Bigots could not even tell you the story behind “Jim Crow Laws” and who created them.  This mantra is another attempt by the Progressive Left to try to shift the Klu Klux Klan and other forms of racial bogotry onto the Republicans when it was the Democrats who created the KKK and ALL of the Jim Crow Laws…  Now, here is the rest of the story!

Who or What was Jim Crow?

You have to go back to 1828 when an entertainer by the name of Thomas Dartmouth, a white person who did a “blackface” routine incorporating a song and dance called “Jump Jim Crow”.  The lyrics were supposedly based on a crippled African slave by the name of Jim Cuff or Jim Crow.  The routine was a mockery of African-Americans and grew to such popularity internationally that upon staging a reception for US Ambassador John Lloyd Stephens in Yukatan, the local band played “Jump Jim Crow” thinking that this was the US National Anthem!

By 1838, Jim Crow became a pejorative adjective meaning African American.  From this beginning, all subsequent laws creating racial segregation became known as Jim Crow laws.  This term preceeded “Uncle Tom” and today have divergent pejorative meanings.

Why were Jim Crow Laws Created:

A Republican President by the name of Abraham Lincoln stood up against cessation and slavery and engaged this nation in the bloodiest ware we have ever fought, the American Civil War (1961-1865).  In the aftermath of the Civil War, the nation had to deal with the new status of former slaves and their entre into society.  Following the Civil War, the US entered into what is known today as the Reconstruction Period (1865-1877) where the nation recreated itself and transitioned into a new post slavery reality.  Needless to say, the Southern Democrats who gained controlled the Southern States in 1870’s, where none too keen on integrating their society with former slaves.  The Southern Democrats regained power either through legitimate elections or through overt acts of violence against blacks to keep them from voting and thus keeping the White Southern Democrats in power…

By 1877, the White, Democratic Redeemer governments created a plethora of Jim Crow Laws, segregating black people from the white population.  The White Democrats created restrictive voting laws to disenfranchise the black voters through the use of “poll taxes”, payment of a tax in order to vote, and “competency” tests, you had to be smart enough to vote, that most of the Blacks and the majority of poor whites were not able to vote.  The White Southern Democrats quickly grandfathered in the poor whites that could not pay the poll tax or those who could not pass the competency tests.  By 1910 in Alabama, only 730 Blacks were registered to vote.  In 27 out of 60 perishes in Alabama, not a single Black was registered to vote.  In 9 of the perishes, only 1 black was registered to vote.  The disenfanchisement was so deep that Black issues disappeared from the Southern Political Landscape.   Those who were not registerd or eligile to vote were not eligible to serve on juries and could not run for local offices. They disappeared from Southern political life.

So, in response to the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 and the loss of the Civil War to the Republican leader of the North, President Lincoln, the South instituted a different brand of slavery via the Jim Crow Laws.  The Republicans attempted to overturn the Jim Crow Laws created by the Democratic South by passing the Civil Rights Act of 1875.  But, White Southern Democrats Formed a voting bloc wall in Congress that kept Congress from passing another civil rights law until 1957.  The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was set up by a Supreme Court Decision in 1955, Brown v State Board of Education.  This case basically ended, at least in the law if not in practice, segregation in public schools.  The voting on the Civil Rights Act was contensious and vigorously opposed by Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina.  Senator Thurmond was ardent segregationist, and he sustained the longest one-person filibuster in history in an attempt to keep the bill from becoming law.  The Act was passed and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  Eisenhower stated:

“I believe that the United States must make certain that every citizen who is entitled to vote under the Constitution is given actually that right. I believe also that in sustaining that right we must sustain the power of the Federal judges in whose hands such cases would fall.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower, July 31, 1957

Following the Civil Rights Act of 1957, was the Civil Rights Act of 1960 then the major legislative act, the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Democrat President John F. Kennedy started the ball rolling on this legislation and Lyndon B. Johnson carried the torch through passage following the death of President Kennedy.  It was the vote by the Republican in Congress that carried the vote.  This act was still being fought by Southen Democrates.

Jim Crow Died Hard at the Hand of White Southern Democrats!

So, when you hear Democrats decry “Jim Crow” when the Republicans try to maintain integrity in our voting process, just remember who first sung the tune “Jump Jim Crow” and who carried the Segregationists Flag all the Way to the Vote on the 1964 Civil Rights Act, SOUTHERN WHITE DEMOCRATS.  One can only hope that the Black Community will someday view Jim Crow Laws and Democrat forced Welfare Programs as being birds of a feather.  Both were intended to “segretage” Blacks from the American Dream.  One through the disenfranchisement of the voting process and the other through strangling Black initiative and advancement.  Both are aimed at political control and both are truly sick…
