Next Steps -> The Senate -> The President -> Government Shutdown!
House Republicans approved 3 amendments to the Continuing resolution that is required to keep the government running past March 4th or so. This means that either the Senate Democrats have to vote down the Continuing Resolution, and take the blame for “shutting down the Government”, or, they can approve the Continuing Resolution and make Obama veto the Continuing Resolution, and then he would take the blame for “shutting down the Government”. Moat likely he will hoodwink the Senate Democrats into be his fall guy and the teleprompter will then go into high-speed trying to blame the Republicans. When either of these scenarios play out, and they have to at this point, the Republicans in the House merely pass the same CR with the same amendments and start the process all over again, and again, and again until the elections in 2012 if need be!
The defending of Obamacare was a little complicated but was accomplished through a series of House amendments. Below are two key amendments that passed.
One Amendment cut off funds to the IRS so they cannot enforce the mandatory coverage provisions of Obamacare.
Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Montana pushed through another amendment prohibiting Kathleen Sibelius, Head of Health and Human Services, from spending any money in 2011 to implement Obamacare.
Dethroning the CZARS:
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) successfully pushed through an amendment to defund the following CZARS:
- Health Care
- Energy and Climate
- Green Jobs
- Urban Affairs
- Guantanamo Bay Closing
- TARP Executive Compensation oversight
- FCC Diversity
- Auto Industry Manufacturing Policy
13 Democrats also joined with the Republicans to defund the Czars. Czars are personal advisors to the President who are not approved by Congress nor are subject to Congressional oversight. Today Scalise said of the Czars: “These unappointed, unaccountable people who are literally running a shadow government, heading up these little fiefdoms that nobody can really seem to identify where they are or what they’re doing; but we do know that they’re wielding vast amounts of power.”
Mike Pence led the fight to add an amendment to the CR to defund Planned Parenthood. The vote was 240-185 with 11 Democrats voting for the amendment, and seven Republicans voting against. PP receives some $365M from taxpayers to support not only their information dissemination but also to fund their abortions which are reported to be around 350,000 per year.
It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Historically, Obama has hidden behind the curtains and not taken on issues himself. He used Reid and Pelosi to do the dirty work. With 28 Democrat Senators up for re-election in November of 2012, some 20 months away, it will be interesting to see who volunteers to jump in front of the bus!
